I Finally Found a Way to Organize Tiny Hardware in the Garage

my favourite cabinet to organize screws and nails

Have you started decluttering this month?? Recently, I shared some of my best tips to get a jumpstart on organizing. I’ve been picking away at a few troublesome spots in our home recently, when I came across an old drawer unit in our garage that was falling apart. It was buckling under the weight of miscellaneous screws, nails, bolts and parts.

I normally leave the garage to Brad. It’s full of tools, parts, dirt bikes, outdoor toys, camping gear, etc. It’s a HUGE job, that will take more than a few hours to organize.

This year, however, I’m going to pick away at it ….organizing a few drawers / areas at a time.

Here’s what I was working with:

organizing garage screws

Miscellaneous screws and bolts were scattered across each drawer and mixed with various other parts. The top drawer was broken and cracked, while some of the items were so heavy the remaining drawers could barely hold the weight.

Simple Steps to Organize Small Parts

  1. My first task was to dump everything out onto a tray (these trays kept everything together while I worked).
  2. Next, I sorted like items into categories.
  3. I removed anything that didn’t belong or was no longer useful.
  4. I added items back into a new storage unit and
  5. Finally, I labeled everything to make it easy to find and return to its home.

I love to use trays to sort small items so i can keep everything together.  These Ikea bed trays are always my go-to for organizing, crafts, and messy projects!

I found this cabinet at Canadian Tire and I couldn’t be happier. All of the parts are now sorted and labeled with enough room to add more hardware pieces as needed.

Here is the finished unit:

It’s not a glamorous project, but it still makes a HUGE difference when you have everything readily available at your fingertips.

With one area of the garage organized, I’m feeling a little more motivated to tackle the rest!
