Get Organized! 6 New Ways to Store Lego in a Small Space
Do you have a Lego fan at home? There are so many benefits to playing Lego – it promotes hand-eye coordination, improves concentration, creativity, problem solving and patience (to name a few).
Did your Lego collection grow after the holidays and now you’re stumped with how to store everything??
When you have a small space, finding a clever way to organize Lego can be a challenge.
Today, I’m sharing 6 of our favourite ways to store Lego in our home.
Sometimes, one solution just isn’t enough. You might want to have extra Lego bricks ready for free-play and keep some kits together to rebuild again and again.
6 unique ways to store Lego in a small home
Store Lego pieces in a Swoop Bag
These large bags are great for free-play and creativity (and they make clean-up a cinch). They are also an easy way to transport Lego to Grandma and Grandpa’s house. I love that the bags come in multiple colours AND sizes.
Store Lego pieces in a specialty container (we own black and white Lego Shaped Storage Bricks)
These storage boxes look just like jumbo versions of a real Lego piece. They’re roomy, stack on top of each other, and look adorable on open shelving or stacked on the floor. (There’s also a newer version that has drawers)
Store Lego pieces in a Large Vase
I love storing toys in unexpected containers. A vase may be my favourite because it’s readily available, looks great, and allows the kids to see what’s inside. I always like to add a few toys to our everyday decor and I move them around the house to keep things feeling fresh. This particular vase is by Muuto. You can find similar cylinder-style vases at Ikea (wouldn’t it look amazing to fill this trio of Ikea vases with colour-coded Lego bricks?) PS..Consider acrylic containers if glass is a concern around little ones.
Store special Lego Sets in their original boxes
If the kids receive a special Lego set, I will keep the box and instructions handy and store all of the pieces inside a ziplock within the box (I also love these mesh ziplock bags). We have a Scooby-Doo Halloween set that we build each October, then tear down and store it in the original box with our Halloween decor until it’s time to rebuild the following year. The entire family has so much fun building the Halloween castle year after year!
Use dividers to sort Lego bricks inside a Drawer
Sometimes you just need a particular piece of Lego and it can be difficult to track down when everything is in a jumbled mess. We find it helpful to have some of our Lego sorted by type of brick (eg. wheels, windows, figures, etc.) and separated into clear drawer organizers inside a coffee table drawer. I recorded my drawer measurements and played around with different combinations at the Dollar Store before finding a mix of drawer organizers that would fit perfectly in our coffee table.
Store Lego bricks in an oversized container (usually reserved for entertaining)
I love to entertain, but we don’t always have room to store special serving pieces. A beverage tub takes up a lot of space when it’s not in use, so why not use it to store Lego by day, (and back to beverages during a party). We purchased this one years ago from Home Sense. You can also find some at Crate and Barrel. A punch bowl is another cool option.
