DIY Chalkboard Art Display (where you least expect it)

My kids LOVE art.  With the amount of crafts we make, we had art hanging from every nook and cranny 🙂  It was time to come up with a better solution.

There are so many great ideas out there, but nothing seemed to fit perfectly into our home.

I wanted an art display space that had the following:

Art Display Requirements

  1. Enough space for the kids to draw and hang multiple art pieces at once (in our home we don’t have the luxury of a dedicated playroom and space is at a premium)
  2. An out of the way location because the entire main floor is visible from our front door (hopefully a mudroom is in my future!)

Our Solution?

We created a large magnetic chalkboard under the bar area of our kitchen.   It’s easy for the kids to access, provides lots of space for drawing and displaying projects, and it’s hidden just enough that it’s not visible from every angle of our house.  Win, win, right?

Eva made the “Summer Rocks” sign and decided she wanted to leave the chalkboard blank for the photos
She also styled the cute little flower out of large Ikea magnets we use to hold crafts and pictures!

Here’s how we put it together:

I purchased a large piece of sheet metal from Canadian Tire to act as our magnetic board.

Brad used screws to attach it to the underside of our kitchen bar.

Next, we painted multiple coats of chalkboard paint and seasoned the chalkboard before the first use. (Chalkboard seasoning = colouring the entire surface with chalk, then wiping the chalk clean before drawing letters and/or pictures)

The Result?

We love it!  The display changes daily.  The kids love to post new art pieces and draw pictures all the time.  We also find it useful as a learning tool (eg. playing alphabet games or reviewing sight words).

The kids favourite part?  It’s easy to access and I’ve given them full control over the art they display.

My favourite part?  It gets used daily and is cleverly hidden so it doesn’t look junky.

How do you display your children’s artwork?
